Winter Wolves Games
C-14 Dating is a Japanese style dating simulator.
In this game, the player plays as Melissa, an American undergraduate attending a field school abroad. While there are definitely factual errors, and the mini-games are limited in their accuracy because of technological limitations on the part of the underlying game system, it’s the first game that represents archaeology as a learned process of professional behaviors, that requires knowledge paired with practice. It presents archaeologists across the spectrum of professional development, from first year undergraduates to PhD candidates, to post-docs, to tenured professors and professional consultants.
It’s too early to say what impact C-14 will have on changes in archaeological representation in games, but it’s a good step, and there is, potentially, a sequel in development.
