Never Alone (Kisima Inŋitchuŋa)
Upper One Games (Cook Inlet Tribal Council), E-Line Media
2014 to 2016 (iOS release date, 2016)
Developed at the request of, and with the input of, the Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Never Alone is included as a case study game to highlight the rarity of Native voices in video-games emphasizing archaeology and cultural pasts.
Though indigenous peoples are claiming more ownership over the use of their cultural patrimony for mass-market entertainment purposes, video-gaming is still an area that relies on Western ideas about ownership of culture, materiality of culture, and narrative structure. The experiential nature of play involved in video-games could provide a new means of connecting Western players to Native worldviews, but it remains to be seen how it will evolve, overall, and how additional games will be received by the larger gaming public.
